Dark, Moody and Different: A Cairns Wedding Editorial at The Chapel Whitfield

Not every wedding has to be soft, pastel and romantic in the traditional sense.

Sometimes the most exciting brief is the one that goes somewhere completely different.

This styled shoot at The Chapel Whitfield in Cairns gave us the chance to play with a darker, moodier wedding style, with a black gown, rich colour, dramatic florals and a slightly wild, almost Wuthering Heights feel.

And this is exactly the kind of creative direction we love.

When different is the whole point

There is something really freeing about a wedding look that does not try to follow the expected formula.

For this shoot, the bride wore black, the styling was dark and contemporary and the whole look had a strong sense of drama.

Rather than softening that with traditional wedding flowers, we leaned right into it.

The bouquet was designed as a true statement piece, long, dramatic and intentionally unusual.

A couture wedding bouquet

This is what we would call one of our couture bouquets.

It was created with a very elongated shape and featured threaded orchids, dark oncidium orchids, Vandas and other unusual floral material selected for their depth, movement and texture.

The rich burgundy and purple tones worked beautifully against the black gown, while the long lines gave the bouquet a very different feel to a traditional bridal bouquet.

It was bold, a little theatrical and definitely not designed to disappear into the background.

That is the joy of a statement bouquet. It becomes part of the whole look rather than simply something the bride carries.

The Chapel Whitfield, Cairns

The shoot was created to showcase The Chapel Whitfield, a wedding and event venue in the leafy Cairns suburb of Whitfield.

The chapel has tropical stained glass, timber detailing and a more intimate feel, which made a really interesting backdrop for this darker wedding concept. The Chapel Whitfield

Against the darker styling and black bridal look, the traditional chapel setting took on a completely different personality.

And that is another thing we love about creative wedding design. A venue does not have to dictate one particular style. Sometimes approaching a familiar space in a completely different way is what makes the result so interesting.

This is where we really shine

We love beautiful garden-inspired wedding flowers. That will always be a big part of The Posy Crew style.

But when someone says, “I want something different”, our ears definitely prick up.

Give us an unusual colour palette, an unexpected reference, an unconventional outfit or an idea that feels a little bit out there and we can really start playing.

We are not interested in simply copying another wedding flower design. We would much rather understand what you are drawn to, then create something that feels individual to you.

Sometimes that means soft and romantic.

Sometimes it means wild and tropical.

And sometimes it means a very long, dark orchid bouquet paired with a black wedding gown in a chapel.

We are very happy with all of the above.
